Amazon said it plans to invest more than €16 billion, or about $18 billion, in Germany in 2027. The announcement came on October 20 at the Invest in Germany summit in Berlin, and part of the money is earmarked for cloud and AI infrastructure.

What Amazon announced

According to the company's statement, the 2027 package covers the expansion of AWS cloud infrastructure, the Amazon Leo satellite network, the modernization of logistics centers and Prime Video productions made in Germany. Amazon will also open a second robotics and AI research lab in Berlin, which is meant to double its research presence in the capital.

The only amount itemized in the statement is €4.8 billion to expand the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region through 2027. The company does not break down the rest of the budget by area, so it is unclear how much will go to logistics, satellites or video content. The statement also gives no capacity figures or opening date for the new resources in Frankfurt.

Euronews reports that about a third of the planned spending is to go toward expanding AWS data centers. That is roughly in line with the €4.8 billion Amazon cites for the Frankfurt region.

Voices from Berlin

Germany is a hub of innovation and one of the most attractive investment opportunities in Europe. - David Zapolsky, Amazon

Katherina Reiche, the federal minister for economic affairs and energy, called the investment a clear vote of confidence in Germany as a location for the future. Rocco Bräuniger, head of Amazon in Germany, stressed that the company has more than 100 sites and, in his words, is "far from done."

Summit backdrop

The summit brought together around 200 company chiefs. Chancellor Friedrich Merz said it produced commitments worth €800 billion through 2028. According to media reports cited by Euronews, the German government also agreed an AI partnership with Nvidia at the same event. Handelsblatt was the first to report it.

The AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region has been running since October 2014, and the AWS European Sovereign Cloud in Germany has been generally available since January 2026. Amazon says the AWS Tech Alliance has reached more than 20,000 students in Germany since its launch in December 2023.

What it means for Europe

The announcement is a company pledge, not a completed investment, and it covers plans for 2027. For Polish companies that run on AWS in Europe, it could mean more available capacity in Frankfurt, but the statement lacks the technical details needed to judge that.
