AMD Touts Role in Artemis II Mission and Surgical Robots at IFA 2026

At the opening keynote of IFA 2026 in Berlin, AMD showed how its processors power onboard systems in the Orion capsule during the Artemis II mission and Intuitive's surgical robots, while also announcing a local AI strategy for personal computers.

AMD opened IFA 2026 in Berlin with a keynote dedicated to the era of personal artificial intelligence, using the occasion to highlight two unusual applications of its chips: the onboard systems of the Orion spacecraft during the Artemis II mission, and surgical robots that cut tissue with millimeter-level precision.

What AMD showed

This year's keynote was titled "The Era of Personal AI: The Future of Imagination" and was meant to signal a shift of some AI workloads from the cloud to personal devices, computers and workstations. Rather than focusing solely on new graphics cards or laptop processors, the company chose to show where its technology ends up outside the typical consumer market.

Two examples from outside the world of personal computers drew the most attention: space and medicine. AMD noted that its chips are responsible for critical components aboard the spacecraft that, under the Artemis program, is set to carry astronauts on a lunar flyby route.

Role in the Artemis II mission

According to materials presented at IFA, AMD technology supports key onboard systems of the Orion capsule used in the Artemis II mission, the first crewed flight around the Moon in more than five decades. Orion is set to carry a four-person crew on a lunar flyby without landing, testing life support, navigation and communication systems ahead of a planned landing in later missions of the program.

AMD has not yet disclosed a detailed list of the specific chips used in Orion or the company integrating these components, limiting itself to a general statement about supporting critical onboard systems. References of this kind to space missions carry image value for the manufacturer, demonstrating hardware reliability under extreme conditions far more demanding than a typical data center or office PC environment.

Precision in robotic surgery

The second example AMD emphasized involves surgical robotics systems from Intuitive. These systems use AMD technology to translate a 3-millimeter movement of an operating surgeon's hand into a precise 1-millimeter incision, while filtering out the operator's natural hand tremor.

This level of precision matters in minimally invasive procedures, where even a fraction of a millimeter can determine patient safety. Intuitive has spent years developing da Vinci-type surgical robots used in thousands of hospitals worldwide, and the presence of AMD technology in this segment shows the chipmaker is increasingly pushing for a foothold in precision medicine, not just typical server rooms.

Local AI strategy and SUSE partnership

Beyond the examples from space and the operating room, AMD announced a partnership with SUSE to build an open artificial intelligence ecosystem. The partnership aims to combine AMD hardware with SUSE software so developers can scale AI projects from a single workstation all the way up to enterprise infrastructure, without having to switch platforms as a product develops.

The company also pointed to other existing deployments of its EPYC processors, including Finland's LUMI supercomputer, whose computing power is roughly equivalent to 1.5 million laptops. LUMI supports climate research and cancer detection, and the waste heat from its operation is used to heat nearby homes in Finland.

What this means for the market

For business and institutional customers, AMD's message comes down to building trust: the processors that end up in laptops and servers have a pedigree rooted in applications with the highest reliability demands, from spaceflight to the operating room. It's a marketing argument aimed at competitors like Intel and Nvidia, who likewise emphasize their chips' presence in demanding sectors.

For Polish companies and institutions in the medical or industrial sectors considering local AI infrastructure deployments, the announcements from IFA signal the direction of AMD's offering toward hybrid solutions linking personal computers, workstations and data centers under a shared software ecosystem, which could over time lower the barrier to building in-house AI systems without full reliance on the public cloud.
