Google Pledges $40 Million in AI Resources to US National Labs Under Genesis Mission

Google has pledged $40 million in AI tokens and cloud credits to support US national laboratories under the government's Genesis Mission. Researchers across all 17 Department of Energy labs will gain access to AlphaEvolve, AlphaFold 3 and other tools.

Google announced at the Genesis Mission Summit 2026 in Washington that it will contribute $40 million in AI tokens and compute credits to US national laboratories. It is another step, this time a concrete financial one, under the government's Genesis Mission, which aims to double the pace of American scientific discovery within a decade through artificial intelligence.

What Google Is Offering

Google's pledge includes free, in-kind access to Google DeepMind's portfolio of science-focused tools. These include AlphaEvolve, a Gemini-powered agent for designing advanced algorithms, AlphaFold 3 for predicting protein structures, AlphaGenome for analyzing DNA variants, WeatherNext for weather forecasting, and AlphaEarth Foundations, a model for detailed mapping of the planet.

The company will also provide a year of seats and tokens for Gemini for Government to tens of thousands of users across the Department of Energy's 17 national laboratories, spanning operations, research and management teams. This expands an earlier commitment Google made to the Genesis Mission back in December 2025.

Scale of the Government Program

Google's announcement coincided with a decision by the US Department of Energy, which on the same day awarded funding to 278 scientific projects chosen from more than 5,000 submissions. The grants totaled $250 million. Recipients include 168 university-led projects, 87 led by national laboratories and NNSA facilities, 19 by companies, and four by nonprofit organizations.

The single largest grant is a three-year, $60 million investment in nuclear energy meant to use AI to build nuclear facilities faster and more safely. The entire Genesis Mission, launched by a presidential executive order in November 2025, has already secured more than $5 billion in federal support.

Results in the Labs

Google offered concrete examples of use. At Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Dr. Henry Kvinge is using AlphaEvolve to map complex mathematical systems, automating the exploration of hypotheses that previously took research teams years.

At the National Laboratory of the Rockies, an autonomous materials discovery program led by Dr. Steven R. Spurgeon saw microscope calibration time drop from 90 to 13 minutes after integrating Gemini, while the number of manual focusing steps fell from 50 to two. The team says this enables genuinely autonomous workflows with real-time observation and reasoning.

Tech Giants Compete for the US Government

Google is not the only tech company putting money into the Genesis Mission. Microsoft has pledged its own roughly $60 million investment in Department of Energy projects, showing that major cloud and AI model providers see government laboratories as strategic partners and reference sites for their scientific tools.

For Google, this is also part of a broader push to position Google DeepMind as a leader in AI for science, alongside Gemini's commercial applications. The company notes it had already launched an early-access program for its tools across all 17 US national laboratories.

For Polish scientists and research institutions, the program signals where AI-backed science funding is heading in the US: large tech companies are increasingly offering not cash but in-kind access to computing infrastructure and models, betting on long-term relationships with the public sector. It is a model that could also surface around the European AI gigafactories that Poland is bidding for as well.
