Google DeepMind Invests $30 Million in AI Science and Education in India

Google DeepMind has announced a package of scientific and educational partnerships in India, including a $30 million Google.org fund for AI-powered research projects. India is already the fourth-largest user of AlphaFold in the world, with more than 180,000 researchers using the tool.

Google DeepMind has announced a broad package of scientific and educational partnerships in India, combining access to advanced AI models with research funding and school programs. At the center of the initiative is a collaboration with the government's Anusandhan National Research Foundation and a new $30 million Google.org fund dedicated to AI-powered scientific research.

Research under the ANRF umbrella

The partnership with the Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF), the government agency that funds scientific research in India, is meant to give Indian scientists, engineers and young researchers access to Google DeepMind's frontier models. The tools being made available include AlphaGenome, which analyzes how DNA mutations affect gene function, AI Co-scientist, a multi-agent virtual research collaborator that helps plan experiments, and Earth AI, used for environmental monitoring and disaster response.

The scale of India's existing engagement with DeepMind's tools is one of the arguments for expanding the collaboration. The country is already the fourth-largest user of AlphaFold in the world, with more than 180,000 researchers using the protein structure prediction model. Google.org is also launching an open grant competition, the Impact Challenge: AI for Science, with a $30 million pool aimed at scientists, NGOs and social enterprises in India and around the world that use AI to drive research breakthroughs.

Indian languages and climate

A separate $2 million funding stream will go toward launching the Indic Language Technologies Research Hub at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. The center is intended to develop language technologies for Indian languages, which today are poorly represented in large language models trained mostly on English-language data.

In climate and energy, Google DeepMind is joining forces with the Council on Energy, Environment and Water and Open Climate Fix to test the WeatherNext and Agri AI models for weather forecasting and renewable energy production. In testing, WeatherNext models improved the accuracy of wind generation forecasts by 8 percent. India is the world's third-largest producer of solar energy and plans to reach 500 gigawatts of renewable capacity by 2030.

AI in schools

The education portion of the program includes a partnership with textbook publisher PM Publishers, which will convert 2 million textbook copies across more than 250 titles for 2,000 schools, adding AI-powered features to them. The Atal Tinkering Labs network, spanning more than 10,000 schools and 11 million students, will receive the Gemini-based ATL Saathi assistant, available to teachers around the clock for lesson planning and training.

In a pilot of Gemini's Guided Learning feature run at City Montessori School in Lucknow, students using the guided-learning mode returned to tasks more often and analyzed material more deeply than with the standard answer mode. Google also states that India leads the world in daily Gemini usage among students.

What it means for the rest of the world

The announcement coincides with the fourth global AI summit being held in India and fits into Google DeepMind's broader strategy of building local ecosystems around its models rather than offering only general API access. For countries outside the AI front rank, including Poland, this model of cooperation shows how large tech companies can negotiate access to research and educational infrastructure in exchange for scaling the use of their tools among local scientific institutions and schools.

The program also includes a specific tool for teachers, backed by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and Fab AI, meant to help educational institutions roll out AI classes without their own technical infrastructure. Google has not yet said whether it plans to launch similar partnership packages in other major emerging markets.
