Google Drops "Show More" Button From AI Overviews, Answer Now Fills the Screen

Google has started expanding full AI Overviews by default for some queries, removing the "Show more" button and pushing traditional links far below the fold. The company confirmed the change after SEO specialist Chris Long first spotted it.

Google has started showing the full, expanded version of AI Overviews by default for selected search queries, removing the "Show more" button that previously kept the AI-generated answer in a collapsed form. The result is that the generated text block alone can fill the entire screen, pushing classic web links to be scrolled down much further than before.

What exactly changed

Until now, AI Overviews appeared at the top of search results as a truncated block of text, and users had to click "Show more" to see the full answer generated by the model. Now, for some queries, that step disappears entirely. Google immediately displays the full, expanded answer along with an open follow-up question field, the one familiar from AI Mode.

The practical effect is easy to spot: reaching the traditional list of links now requires scrolling much further than it did just a few weeks ago. For definition-style queries, the AI summary can fill the entire visible screen, pushing organic results out of the first view.

Google's response

A Google spokesperson confirmed the change and explained that it does not apply to all searches, only to selected topics that the system considers suitable for the expanded format. Google's Robby Stein also weighed in, reiterating that the mechanism works selectively.

Google justifies the decision by citing its own research, according to which users who see the full AI answer immediately rate the search engine as more helpful and are more likely to ask follow-up questions within the same session. The company notes that the expansion does not happen if someone has already started scrolling the page, so they don't lose their place in the results.

Context for publishers and creators

The change fits into a broader trend that has worried publishers and content creators dependent on search traffic for months. The more space the AI answer itself takes up, the smaller the chance that a user will reach a link to an external site at all, especially for simple informational queries where AI Overviews can fully satisfy the user's need without leaving Google.

For the SEO industry, this is another signal that the classic list of ten blue links is ceasing to be the default search results format. Google keeps testing and rolling out features that make ordinary search resemble a conversation with an AI assistant, the kind familiar from AI Mode, rather than browsing a directory of links.

What this means for Polish users

The change concerns Google's global search infrastructure, so it may eventually extend to Polish-language queries as well, following the pattern of earlier AI Overviews and AI Mode rollouts. For Polish companies and newsrooms building visibility in search results, this is another argument for not relying solely on classic traffic from organic links, but also tracking how their brand and content are cited directly within AI summaries.

Google has not yet disclosed what share of queries the new, fully expanded format covers, or whether the change will roll out to all markets at once. The company only says it will continue testing and gradually expanding the mechanism wherever its systems determine it brings users the greatest benefit.
