Łęczna Hospital to Deploy AI for Early Warning in Intensive Care

SPZOZ in Łęczna has secured over PLN 2.7 million in EU funding for an artificial intelligence system that will analyze intensive care patients' vital signs and flag threats hours before symptoms appear.

The Independent Public Healthcare Institution (SPZOZ) in Łęczna will deploy an artificial intelligence system to support doctors in the intensive care unit. The funding agreement was signed on July 22, 2026, during a meeting at the Marshal's Office of the Lubelskie Voivodeship (the regional government office).

The project involves deploying tools that analyze patients' vital signs in real time: heart rate, blood pressure, respiratory rate and blood oxygen saturation. The system is also meant to interpret laboratory test results and ECG readings, cross-referencing them with the patient's current condition.

Early Warning in Intensive Care

The key goal of the rollout is to shorten medical staff's response time in life-threatening situations. According to the hospital, the algorithms are meant to catch worrying trends in patient data long before visible symptoms of deterioration appear, which on an intensive care unit can be the difference between life and death.

Intensive care units generate enormous streams of data from bedside monitors, infusion pumps and ventilators. Continuous manual analysis of these readings by doctors and nurses is in practice impossible with typical shift staffing, which is why more and more facilities are turning to systems that automatically flag anomalies.

Where the Money Comes From

Funding comes from the EU program European Funds for Lubelskie 2021-2027, under the measure "Digital Lubelskie in Healthcare." It's the same mechanism used by several other facilities in the region to modernize digital infrastructure and hospital cybersecurity.

The grant of over PLN 2.7 million covers most of the total project cost, valued at PLN 3.26 million. The hospital must cover the remainder from its own funds or the voivodeship's self-government budget.

More Than Just AI

The SPZOZ Łęczna project isn't limited to algorithms supporting intensive care. It also includes the development of e-services for patients and investment in hospital system cybersecurity, fitting into a broader trend of digitalization among medical facilities in the Lubelskie Voivodeship funded through the same program.

The hospital director emphasizes that the system is meant to play a supporting role, not replace doctors' clinical decisions. This approach matches the cautious tone many Polish healthcare facilities are taking toward AI tools in medicine, where responsibility for treatment decisions remains with staff.

Similar projects are already being implemented at other Polish hospitals, though they typically focus on analyzing diagnostic images, such as X-rays or CT scans. A rollout focused on continuous, real-time monitoring of vital signs in intensive care is a less common, though growing, direction for artificial intelligence use in Polish healthcare.

A detailed implementation timeline for the system has not yet been announced. The hospital says it will develop e-services alongside the rollout of the AI tools, suggesting that full use of the analytical functions in the intensive care unit will happen gradually over the coming months.
