Israel Unveils ELLYON, an AI-Directed Electronic Warfare Aircraft

Israel Aerospace Industries unveiled ELLYON in Tel Aviv on July 20, an aircraft combining electronic jamming with intelligence gathering whose mission is coordinated by an AI system analyzing sensor data in real time.

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) unveiled ELLYON in Tel Aviv on Monday, a new mission aircraft in which the coordination of electronic warfare and intelligence gathering is handled by an AI-managed system. It marks another step toward arming reconnaissance platforms with autonomous decision-making algorithms, this time in the electronic warfare segment.

ELLYON combines in a single platform three functions that were previously split across different aircraft: jamming of radars and communications, signals intelligence gathering, and imagery reconnaissance. IAI stresses that the system can detect threats, analyze them and conduct electronic countermeasures against them within the same mission, without needing separate aircraft for each task.

The core element is an AI-based mission management system. It is responsible for processing data streams from multiple sensors at once, turning them into usable intelligence, and relaying that in real time to ground command centers, control stations and other aircraft taking part in the mission.

Why the base is a private jet

Rather than building a dedicated military airframe, IAI based ELLYON on the Bombardier Global 6500, a business-class jet, though the company notes the system is effectively platform-independent and can be installed on other large aircraft of the same type. This approach shortens deployment time and cuts costs compared with designing an aircraft from scratch, while still providing the range and payload capacity needed to carry an extensive sensor suite.

An operating range measured in hundreds of kilometers from the target is meant to reduce risk to crew and equipment, allowing jamming and intelligence collection without entering the reach of an adversary's air defense systems.

Electronic warfare with AI behind it

IAI says the technology used in ELLYON draws on solutions already proven operationally by Israel's armed forces, without specifying in which conflicts or missions. The company also did not disclose the platform's price or the names of countries or clients interested in purchasing it, which is typical at the unveiling stage of new military hardware, before the first export contracts are signed.

The presentation fits into a broader trend of moving AI algorithms from civilian applications into weapons systems, where they are meant to speed up signal analysis and shorten the time between detecting a threat and responding to it. Unlike fully autonomous weapons, ELLYON's mission management system is meant to support operators, integrating data from multiple sources into a single situational picture.

For Polish readers, the regional context matters: militaries are increasingly turning to AI for reconnaissance and border-security tasks, a trend also visible in Poland's own modernization programs. Presentations like ELLYON's show the direction the electronic warfare equipment market is heading, a market where European and American companies also compete.

IAI has not disclosed a timeline for ELLYON entering service or any initial orders. The next test for the program will be whether it finds export customers beyond Israel, where the aircraft is positioned to compete with similar reconnaissance and jamming platforms offered by Western defense contractors.
