John Deere Launches JD, an AI Assistant for Field Data

John Deere, the world's largest manufacturer of agricultural machinery, unveiled an AI assistant called JD on September 1, 2026, at the Farm Progress Show in Iowa. The tool, built into the Operations Center platform, lets farmers ask questions in plain language about the data collected by their machines, instead of manually digging through dozens of dashboards and map layers.
Conversation Instead of Dashboards
Instead of clicking through reports and map layers in Operations Center, a farmer can now ask JD directly how fuel consumption has changed over the past three seasons, which sprayer operator covered the most hectares, or when, based on the collected data, harvest should begin. The system is designed to answer within seconds, drawing on field, machine and operational data gathered by the farm.
John Deere stresses that JD doesn't just read data, it also combines it with the company's own agronomic and machine-operation expertise. The goal is to shift harvest analysis from end-of-season summaries to real-time, operational guidance while fieldwork is underway.
Who's Behind the Project
The assistant was introduced by Jahmy Hindman, John Deere's chief technology officer, and Deanna Kovar, president of the company's precision agriculture and turf division. It was Kovar who presented JD to journalists at the Iowa show as a tool meant to free farmers from manually hunting for answers in their data.
JD is now the researcher for the farmer - the data analyst - to go seek out those answers - Deanna Kovar, worldwide president of agriculture and turf, Deere & Co.
Data Stays With the Farmer
Alongside the JD launch, the company reiterated its Farmer Data Commitment, a set of principles ensuring that data collected by the machines remains the farmer's property, is not sold, and is used solely for that farmer's operation. It's a response to longstanding concerns in the agricultural industry over who actually controls the information flowing from sensors on combines and tractors.
The service is expected to be free for users of the Operations Center app, which a large share of John Deere equipment users in North America have already relied on for more than a decade.
Market Context
JD's launch fits into a broader trend of bringing chat-based AI assistants into heavy industry and agriculture, where companies like John Deere have spent years investing in autonomous tractors, weed-recognition systems and precision spraying. JD doesn't control machines directly, but it's meant to serve as an entry point for analyzing the data those machines already collect.
For Polish farms using John Deere equipment, the key question will be the pace and scope of the rollout beyond the US market. The company has not yet given a timeline for bringing the assistant to Europe, focusing for now on tests with select customers in the US.
John Deere says the coming months will show how JD performs in the daily work of farms enrolled in the early access program, before the tool reaches a wider audience through the browser, the mobile app and eventually an in-cab interface.
