Microsoft Deploys Claude Fable 5.1 Across Copilot Cowork, Studio, and GitHub Copilot

Microsoft has rolled out Anthropic's Claude Fable 5.1 in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, while GitHub Copilot simultaneously announced general availability of the model. It marks the broadest deployment yet of the latest Mythos-class model across Microsoft's products, spanning both office work and software development.

What's changing

Claude Fable 5.1 joins the list of models available in Copilot Cowork and Copilot Studio, giving customers another option for delegating more complex tasks to AI. Microsoft describes it as a model built for long-running work, financial analysis, and front-end coding with a visual layer, with an emphasis on precise upfront planning and concise summaries at the end of a task.

A key piece of the integration is Work IQ, a feature that embeds the model into a user's files, meetings, chats, and company data, within their existing permissions. This is meant to let the model reason from actual work rather than just prompt content, which Microsoft says produces more accurate answers with traceable sources.

GitHub Copilot and coding work

GitHub separately announced that Claude Fable 5.1 is now generally available in GitHub Copilot, following an earlier preview period. The model can be selected from the model picker in Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, Copilot CLI, the GitHub Copilot app, github.com, the iOS and Android mobile apps, as well as JetBrains IDEs, Xcode, and Eclipse.

Access is available to users on Copilot Pro+, Copilot Max, Copilot Business, and Copilot Enterprise plans. In internal testing, GitHub points to strong results for the model in deep codebase analysis, building new features, and handling complex, multi-step agentic workflows.

Data retention as the exception

Unlike other Claude family models available in GitHub Copilot, Fable 5.1 requires data retention by default, used to run Anthropic's safety classifiers, though the retained data is not used to train models. Select enterprise customers can negotiate access without this retention through the end of the current calendar year, which for companies with strict data policies could be the deciding factor in adoption.

What it means for businesses

Availability depends on region and organization, and administrators manage it through the Microsoft 365 admin center. It's the typical staged rollout pattern for large deployments, reaching select enterprise customers first before extending to a wider user base.

For Polish companies using Microsoft 365 and GitHub Copilot, this means they can test one of Anthropic's newest models without setting up a separate Claude subscription or integrating the API directly. That matters for organizations already invested in the Microsoft ecosystem who want to add a model with a different profile than the default OpenAI models Copilot has used so far.

Bringing a rival provider's model into its own tools also reinforces Microsoft's long-running strategy of giving Copilot customers a choice between models from different labs rather than tying them exclusively to OpenAI. Fable 5.1 thus joins the Fable 5 and Sonnet 5 models previously made available in Cowork.
