The British band Muse, known for dystopian lyrics about the threat of machines, has fallen victim to a tech giant itself. Meta took over the @Muse handle on Instagram and Facebook for its new artificial intelligence agent, forcing the group to switch to @Museband.

Quiet Change Before the Launch

Fans of the band noticed the @Muse name disappear from Instagram back in June, long before Meta officially announced its AI agent. The profile changed to @Museband without any comment from the musicians. Only after the service's official launch on September 8 did it become clear why.

Because Meta owns both Instagram and Facebook, forcing the name change on those platforms required no consent from the band. Muse later updated its names on X and TikTok as well, even though Meta has no control over account naming there, suggesting a decision to unify the brand across all channels.

What Is the Muse Agent

Meta's new product is a personal AI agent the company describes as part of Mark Zuckerberg's vision of superintelligence accessible to everyone. The agent is meant to help with everyday tasks, from writing emails and booking travel to building long-term plans, such as a year-long training program or starting a business.

Muse can open a browser on its own, fill out forms, and negotiate on the user's behalf. Once a goal is set, the agent draws up a plan of action and carries it out without requiring constant supervision, setting it apart from simple chatbots. Later this year, Meta plans to introduce a feature called Muse Confidential VM, in which user data and conversations would be encrypted with a key accessible only to the user.

Fan Reactions

News of the handle takeover sparked a wave of comments on Reddit and other platforms, where users pointed out the irony of the situation. The band has sung for years about the dangers of technology and machines seizing power, so losing its own digital identity to an AI system struck many fans as a bitter joke of fate.

Neither the band nor Mark Zuckerberg has officially commented on the name change. Meta also has not clarified whether any negotiations took place with the band or its label over the handle before the service launched.

Brand Disputes in the Age of AI Agents

The case illustrates a new kind of conflict born from big tech platforms' mass rollout of named AI products. Companies like Meta control both social media infrastructure and the naming of their new products, giving them the practical ability to push existing brands out of digital spaces without any formal legal dispute.

For creators, artists, and companies whose names overlap with the names of future products from major tech companies, this could mean similar risk down the road. In this case, a single decision by the platform-owning company was enough to strip a decades-old, recognizable brand of its most important address on the web.

Muse remains active and continues to communicate with fans under its new handle, @Museband, but the case may reverberate as more AI products launch under names that overlap with existing brands. It also shows how little it takes for a global platform to force a change of digital identity on an entity that has operated under it for decades.
