Polish Startup Snap4ID Launches Document Photos Without a Studio Visit

Former Google and JPMorgan managers have launched Snap4ID, a browser-based service for taking biometric document photos with a phone, deliberately without generative AI. The launch coincides with new regulations requiring Polish school ID photos to meet the same standards as national ID card photos.

Marcin Malinowski and Łukasz Radomski, childhood friends, have launched Snap4ID, a service that lets users take a document photo with an ordinary phone, without visiting a photo studio and without installing an app. The whole process takes place in a browser at snap4.id, and the launch coincides with the first school year in which student ID photos must meet the same technical requirements as national ID card photos.

How the Service Works

The SmartCam feature analyzes the camera feed in real time and tells the user how to position their head, where to look, and what clothing to avoid so the photo meets document standards. The whole process takes about a minute. The customer sees the result for free first and only pays once they accept it - if the photo doesn't work for them, they can retake it at no extra cost.

No Generative AI

The most distinctive decision made by the founders concerns the technology they deliberately chose not to use. Snap4ID does not use generative artificial intelligence to touch up photos. Instead, the system relies on deterministic geometric, lighting and mathematical algorithms that crop, scale, level and correct the light profile, exactly as a traditional photographer in a studio would, but without altering the geometry of the user's face.

That distinction has practical significance. A photo for a national ID card, passport or student ID must faithfully represent the holder's face, since it is used for identification. Generative tools that retouch or "beautify" a face can violate the biometric requirements set for such documents, and in extreme cases can cause the photo to no longer match the person's actual appearance.

Founders' Backgrounds

Malinowski spent more than 11 years at Google, responsible for global partnerships, platforms and privacy issues for the Central and Eastern Europe region, and earlier worked at Netia. Radomski spent years as an executive director at JPMorgan Chase, and before that worked at Thomson Reuters and Thomson Financial. Both have more than 25 years of combined experience in technology and finance, which, as industry media point out, sets Snap4ID apart from typical photo startups founded by people from the creative industry.

Data Protection and Business Model

The company says it does not build user profiles and does not use facial recognition or identity verification. Instead of accounts and passwords, the system uses random session identifiers. Data is processed on Google Cloud Platform infrastructure with full encryption, and payments are handled by Stripe. The business model is simple: previewing and preparing the photo is free, and a fee applies only once the final result is accepted.

What This Means for Polish Families

For parents, the practical consequence of the new regulations is straightforward: a child starting first grade in September will need a photo that meets the same standards as a passport photo, rather than a simple portrait taken at home on a smartphone with no guidelines. Snap4ID is targeting exactly that gap, aiming to replace a trip to a photo studio, the wait in line and the cost of an in-person service, offering a solution accessible from a browser at any time.

The scale of the market the startup is entering follows directly from the Ministry of Education's figures - nearly a million students needing a compliant photo within two months represents potentially large but also highly seasonal demand. Support for specifications from more than 20 countries suggests the founders are also targeting foreign markets from the start, where similar requirements apply to ID cards, visas and driving licenses.

Snap4ID's story also fits into a broader, contrasting trend visible across the AI industry - some new products are deliberately forgoing generative models where fidelity and trust in the result matter more than creativity or visual flair. In the realm of identity documents, where any discrepancy between a photo and a person's face can lead to an application being rejected by an official body, that technological choice looks like a deliberate strategy of differentiating the service from AI-powered photo apps built around beautifying portraits.
