Telefónica and Harrison.ai Launch AI System for Chest X-Ray Analysis in Spain
Telefónica Tech, together with Australian company Harrison.ai, is rolling out an AI system to Spanish hospitals that automatically detects up to 124 clinical findings on chest X-rays, supporting lung cancer detection.
Telefónica Tech, the technology arm of the Spanish telecom operator, has launched an artificial intelligence system to support chest X-ray diagnostics in partnership with Australian company Harrison.ai. The tool is already being rolled out to regional health services in Spain and is intended to serve as a second pair of eyes for radiologists, not to replace their decisions.
The system, developed by Harrison.ai, analyzes a standard chest X-ray and flags potential abnormalities within seconds. Detected findings include pulmonary nodules, which can signal early-stage lung cancer, as well as other conditions requiring urgent intervention, such as pneumothorax or an enlarged cardiac silhouette.
How the Medical Filter Works
Telefónica Tech describes the solution as a clinical decision-support tool rather than an autonomous diagnostic system. Medical staff review the algorithm's findings through a web interface integrated with existing hospital systems, then make the final diagnosis and treatment decision themselves. In practice, the system is meant to act as a filter that prioritizes urgent cases and reduces the number of unnecessary specialist referrals when an X-ray raises no concerns.
Chest X-rays are among the most commonly performed imaging examinations in the world, yet their interpretation can be time-consuming, especially at facilities facing a shortage of radiologists. Automatically flagging abnormalities is meant to shorten patients' wait times for results and reduce the risk of missing subtle changes when imaging departments are under heavy workload.
Scale of Training Data
The key argument both companies make for the tool's reliability is the scale and quality of the data used to train it. More than 780,000 X-ray examinations were independently labeled by at least three qualified radiologists each, intended to limit errors stemming from a single, subjective assessment. CE IIb certification means the system has passed formal regulatory review as a higher-risk medical device, which in the European Union requires documented clinical studies and oversight of data quality.

Market Context
Telefónica Tech has spent several years expanding its digital services offering for the healthcare sector, moving beyond traditional telecom infrastructure. Harrison.ai, founded by physician Aengus Tran, specializes in certified diagnostic algorithms and already has deployments in Australia and Asia. Combining the telecom operator's reach with a ready-made, certified medical product allows faster access to regional healthcare systems than a medtech startup could achieve entering a new market on its own.
For now, the rollout covers select regional health services in Spain, and the companies have not yet disclosed a timeline for expansion into other countries. For the European AI imaging diagnostics market, this is another sign that large telecom companies see healthcare as a growth area, competing with specialized providers such as Siemens Healthineers and smaller medtech firms.
For Polish readers, the pace at which similar tools are appearing in domestic hospitals is worth noting. Systems supporting the reading of X-ray and CT scans have also been rolled out in Polish facilities in recent months, and the CE IIb certification held by the Telefónica and Harrison.ai solution is a standard that domestic deployments will increasingly be required to meet as EU regulations on AI-based medical devices grow stricter.
Neither party has disclosed the financial terms of the partnership or the target number of facilities to be covered by the rollout. Telefónica Tech says it will continue expanding its AI offering for the healthcare sector, while Harrison.ai views Spain as its entry point into the European market.
