ZTE and ByteDance Unveil First Smartphone With an Autonomous AI Agent
Nubia NaviX Ultra, a joint project between ZTE and ByteDance, launches September 16 as a phone with a built-in Doubao agent that carries out tasks across apps on its own instead of just answering questions.

ZTE has confirmed that the Nubia NaviX Ultra smartphone will launch on September 16, 2026. The phone, developed jointly with Chinese giant ByteDance, is billed as the first device on the market to embed an autonomous AI agent directly into the operating system, rather than bolting a set of extra features onto an existing interface.
At the heart of the device is the Nebula AIOS system, built on Android 16 and deeply integrated with ByteDance's Doubao assistant. Unlike Samsung's Galaxy AI or Apple Intelligence, which offer ready-made functions for specific tasks, the agent in the NaviX Ultra is designed to independently plan and carry out multi-step actions from a single natural-language command.
What the Doubao Agent Can Do
According to the manufacturer's materials, the agent understands conversational context, remembers information provided earlier, and switches between apps without additional user instructions. It's meant to handle ride-hailing, route planning, sorting photos, or ordering food from a single voice or text command.
The feature can be triggered both by voice and by a dedicated button on the phone's body, meant to set it apart from assistants buried deep in settings menus. ZTE and ByteDance stress that this is the first integration of a third-party agent this tightly woven into a smartphone's system layer, rather than an app-level overlay.
Specs and Suppliers
On the hardware side, the NaviX Ultra runs on a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor, a 7,100 mAh battery with 90-100W wired charging, and a 6.78-inch OLED display at 1.5K resolution with a 144Hz refresh rate. The main camera is 50MP, backed by an ultra-wide lens and a periscope telephoto lens, while the selfie camera is also 50MP.
The LPDDR5X RAM runs at 10,667 Mb/s and comes from Chinese manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies, which TechNode describes as the first mass deployment of such fast, domestically produced chips of this type. Confirmed hardware partners also include Qualcomm, BOE, Samsung Semiconductor, and Goodix.
Sales and Market Position
An earlier, limited batch of 30,000 units sold out in China within hours, with resale prices on the secondary market doubling relative to the official price of 3,499 yuan. Nubia's chief, Ni Fei, criticized competitors for their superficial approach to AI in phones.

IDC analyst Arthur Guo predicts that devices with such advanced AI agents could dominate more than half of the Chinese smartphone market as early as this year. Competitors such as StepFun, with its Amoo agent, and Honor, working with Alibaba, are developing similar solutions, showing that the race for agentic smartphones in China is only just heating up.
Implications for the Global Market
For now, the NaviX Ultra remains a project aimed mainly at the Chinese market, with no officially confirmed European price or launch date outside China. Still, the timing coincides with reports of a phone reportedly being designed by OpenAI itself, suggesting that major tech players see agentic smartphones as another front in their rivalry, alongside the language models themselves.
For Polish users and distributors, this is mainly a signal of where the category is heading rather than a sign of imminent availability. If sales in China confirm customer interest in system-level agents, similar solutions are likely to appear in future generations of Samsung, Xiaomi, or Honor phones sold in Europe as well.
