Alphabet shares gained nearly 3 percent in morning trading on July 31, briefly breaking above $340 to reach $338.95. It was the stock's strongest one-day reaction to company news in weeks, triggered directly by the launch of Google DeepMind's new generation of robotics models.
What DeepMind Unveiled
Google DeepMind announced three new physical AI models on July 30. Gemini Robotics 2 controls a humanoid's entire body with a single unified policy, covering the legs, torso, arms, and fingers. Gemini Robotics ER 2 is an embodied reasoning model that plans complex tasks, monitors their execution in real time, and coordinates the work of multiple robots at once. The third model, On-Device 2, is designed to run locally on the device itself, without a connection to the cloud.
The key new feature in ER 2 is so-called temporal intelligence, which lets a robot recognize when a task has actually been completed rather than simply executing a planned sequence of movements. The model connects via a bidirectional stream in the Gemini Live API, allowing the robot to plan its next step while still carrying out the current action, instead of pausing to think between actions.
Another new feature is collaboration among multiple robots of different types, such as a wheeled rover and a humanoid, which share a common understanding of the situation and can split a complex workflow between them. DeepMind also introduced the ASIMOV-Agentic safety benchmark, which evaluates robots' ability to avoid collisions and other hazards, along with a mechanism that pauses a humanoid's work when a person comes nearby and resumes it only once the person has left the area.

The market's reaction is not just about the technology itself but about the context in which it arrived. Since the May peak of $405, Alphabet shares had lost as much as 22 percent at their worst point, mainly due to growing investor concern over the scale of capital spending on generative AI and cloud infrastructure, and whether those investments would translate into real revenue. The robotics model launch gave investors concrete evidence that the money the company is spending on AI infrastructure is also producing products beyond chatbots and search.
