OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google reported nearly simultaneous outages of their flagship models on September 3, with problems also hitting Grok, GitHub Copilot, Hugging Face, and Microsoft Azure. It's a rare case of the AI industry's three biggest players going down on the same day.

On Wednesday morning US time, thousands of users worldwide lost access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, and Grok almost simultaneously. It's a rare case where three of the largest language model providers reported outages on the same day, with the wave of downtime also spilling over to tools that depend on their infrastructure, including GitHub Copilot and Cursor.

What happened

The first reports of problems appeared Wednesday morning, before 8:07 a.m. Pacific time. OpenAI confirmed on its status page an abnormal rise in errors affecting ChatGPT and Codex, Anthropic acknowledged that Claude models experienced service degradation and an increased error rate, and Google did not immediately confirm its own Gemini outage, even as users flooded reports of access problems.

Grok from xAI joined the outage, and Cursor, the popular AI-assisted coding tool that relies on Claude and Grok models, was indirectly affected as well. 9to5Google pointed to a possible common thread: a simultaneous rise in reports of Microsoft Azure outages, whose cloud infrastructure underpins part of these platforms' processing.

Scale and duration

According to a reconstruction of events, OpenAI resolved its outage the fastest, in 24 minutes between 10:58 and 11:22 UTC, though that same morning the company also dealt with a separate, five-minute outage of ChatGPT's Work Mode. Google's problems lasted the longest, with user-reported Gemini disruptions coinciding with an incident that took about two hours to fully resolve.

Anthropic had its own separate, earlier episode the day before, on September 2, lasting 25 minutes, and following the main wave of outages on September 3 the company reported ongoing problems with its Opus 4.8 and Opus 5 models. All three companies posted updates on their status pages throughout the incident.

Industry context

An analysis published by CryptoBriefing describes Wednesday's coincidence as a rare triple disruption, occurring on the same day at three major providers at once. The authors note, however, that despite major AI providers maintaining 99.9 percent service availability in 2026, companies in the industry recorded dozens of similar outages over the course of the year, most linked to the strain of scaling infrastructure to handle model queries.

This growing load on inference infrastructure, the servers that respond in real time to queries from users and companies using their APIs, is cited as a recurring risk factor as the number of business integrations with language models grows faster than providers' ability to scale computing capacity predictably.

What it means for businesses

The outage hit not only consumer chat interfaces but also developer APIs, image generation tools, and account signup processes, directly translating into downtime for companies that built their products or internal processes around these models. For many businesses relying on automation built around a single AI provider, it meant a real disruption to customer service operations or development tools.

Commentators recommend a multi-provider architecture as a way to limit the risk of similar outages, while cautioning that the APIs of different model providers are not fully interchangeable. Switching from Claude to GPT or Gemini in the middle of an outage requires the integration to have been planned in advance, not just adding a backup API key.

None of the three companies has yet published a detailed post-mortem explaining the root technical cause of the outage, beyond initial mentions of elevated error rates.
