ByteDance, the owner of TikTok, announced the launch of Seedream 5.0 Pro on July 8, a new version of its image generation and editing model. The model went live immediately on the Dreamina platform as well as via API on Volcano Engine and BytePlus, putting the company in direct competition with OpenAI's GPT-Image 2 in the market for professional AI-powered graphics tools.

The model brings four main improvements over the previous Seedream generation: visualization of complex data and infographics, precise interactive editing, multilingual support, and layer separation. According to its creators, that last feature is what sets a professional tool apart from an ordinary image generator.

Editing like a design program

Rather than returning a finished, flat image, Seedream 5.0 Pro can generate a file with separate, editable layers, bringing it closer to how a classic design program works than a typical text-to-image generator. The model supports point and lasso selection, sketching out compositions, swapping colors, and reconstructing previously hidden background areas after an element is removed from the frame.

The company also highlights improvements in rendering light, material physics and portrait textures, which matters for generating advertising and product graphics that approach photographic quality.

A clash with GPT-Image 2

Analysts comparing the two models note that both GPT-Image 2 and Seedream 5.0 Pro are praised for the quality of typography and text layout within images, suggesting the market for professional image generators is converging toward a shared level of functionality rather than a clear lead for either player. Seedream's advantage is said to lie in multilingual text rendering, including non-Latin scripts, an area where its Silicon Valley competition performs more weakly.

Per-image pricing varies by API provider, typically ranging from a few to just over a dozen cents per generated image depending on output resolution, while Dreamina offers free daily credit allowances that let users test the model without paying.

Chinese giants in the creative market

The launch of Seedream 5.0 Pro fits into a broader trend in which Chinese tech companies, alongside language models such as Z.ai's GLM, are increasingly competing in the image and video generation segment as well, an area previously dominated by American labs. For Polish creative and marketing agencies, this means another, cheaper tool for producing multilingual graphics, including materials created simultaneously in several language versions for international campaigns.

Global availability through BytePlus ModelArk means European developers can already integrate the model into their own applications, though as with other Chinese AI services, some legal teams may want to first assess questions around data processing outside the European Union.
