Ford Uses AI to Revive Its 1964 Concept Car, the Aurora

Ford used AI video production tools to give its 1964 concept car, the Aurora, the debut it never had. The film was built from archival photos and press materials to mark National AI Day in the US.

Ford turned to AI video production tools to give its futuristic 1964 Aurora concept wagon the launch it never got in its lifetime. The company's archive team used photos, design materials and original press releases from more than sixty years ago to generate a film showing what an Aurora ad campaign might have looked like if Madison Avenue's 1960s creatives had access to today's AI tools.

A Future Car From Sixty Years Ago

The Aurora was one of Ford's experimental X-Cars concept models, built to showcase the direction of automotive styling and engineering. Instead of a conventional steering wheel, the car had a horizontal control yoke that needed just a half turn from one extreme position to the other. The roof featured an electrochromic sunroof that switched from transparent to opaque at the push of a button, and the dashboard included a map that tracked the vehicle's position in real time, even though GPS was still roughly two decades away.

The interior was split into three zones: a command station up front, a central lounge, and a rear play area for children separated by a glass partition. A communications console housed an AM/FM radio, a television and an audio recording device, along with a table with a compartment for ice and drinks. The seats could swivel, letting the front passenger turn to face those in the back, creating a living-room-like layout.

How the Film Was Made

Ford's archive team decided to use the National AI Day anniversary to test how video generation tools would handle recreating the Aurora's debut. The film was built entirely from authentic sources, archival photographs, design documentation and original 1964 press releases, which AI processed into a cinematic presentation resembling a big-budget car launch.

Ryan also pointed out that decades-old fantasies are rarely pure fantasy. In his view, concepts tested in vehicles like the Aurora regularly resurface later in production models, even if it takes many years for the technology to mature enough for mass production.

The 1964 Vision Versus Today's Cars

Some of the Aurora's features did eventually make it into production, in more or less similar form: zoned climate control, tinted electrochromic glass, rear-seat entertainment systems and rudimentary navigation are standard in many cars today. Ford noted that the Aurora's half-turn control yoke is nearly identical to the setup Tesla used in the Cybertruck's steering yoke decades later.

Not every idea from the 1960s made it to reality. The dedicated children's play area behind a glass partition, the swiveling lounge-style seats and the glowing electroluminescent body trim remained curiosities of the era that never reached production, at Ford or anywhere else.

Archival Marketing in the Generative AI Era

The Aurora project fits into a growing practice among automakers and other brands of using generative AI to bring their marketing archives back to life instead of creating content from scratch. Rather than an expensive reconstruction with actors, sets and a physical vehicle, Ford's team achieved the effect of a cinematic launch using existing source material processed by video-generation algorithms.

For readers following the auto and marketing industries, it's an example of how major corporations treat generative AI not just as a tool for designing new products, but also as a fast, cheap way to put archival assets to use, photos, patent documentation and old ad materials that previously sat unused in corporate collections.

Ford did not disclose exactly which video generation tools its archive team used, nor did it reveal the production budget. The company also hasn't said whether similar projects will cover other historic concept models from its more than century-long history.
