A spokesman for Ukraine's Air Force says robotic gun turrets with automatic aiming have downed Russian jet-powered drones, including the Geran-5. An expert cautions that this is a "last mile" solution, limited by the machine gun it uses.

Ukrainian air defense has shot down Russian jet-powered drones, including the Geran-5, using robotic gun turrets, Ukrainian Air Force spokesman Col. Yurii Ihnat said on Monday, October 5. According to him, artificial intelligence makes it possible to fight even such fast targets.

What was announced

Ihnat's statement was quoted by Ukrainska Pravda and reported in Poland by PAP; the text appeared in Bankier.pl and Forsal.pl, among others. The spokesman said that automating aiming and fire is especially important against fast jet drones. He cautioned, however, that the capabilities of such systems are limited by the weapon they use.

Ihnat also said the technology eliminated human error and technical calculations on the crew's side. The sources do not say how many drones were downed, where it happened or exactly when. The claims described here are assessments by the spokesman and an expert, not an independent measurement of effectiveness.

How the system works

Ukrainian aviation expert Anatoliy Khrapchynskyi told PAP that, based on the target's heading and altitude, the system automatically calculates the lead point, meaning the place where fire must be opened, taking ballistic parameters into account. He called it a "last mile" solution.

In his view, the range and effective ceiling are heavily limited by the capabilities of the machine gun in use. With slower piston-engine drones, defenders had more time to deploy fire teams. Jet drones cut the reaction time from tens of minutes to a few seconds, which he says exceeds the physical abilities of a machine gun operator.

Russian tactics and limits

Khrapchynskyi says Russians launch the drones from mobile launchers in groups of 5-6 aircraft. Coordination runs through data links and retransmitters, including on the territory of Belarus. Some of the drones may receive large data packets, video and telemetry, while the rest fly pre-planned routes or get data from lead aircraft.

He sees the main challenge in the sheer number and density of attacks, which threaten to overload detection and guidance systems and cause problems with reloading launchers. He said no air defense in the world can guarantee full protection against attacks of this scale. He also pointed to a shortage of suitable interceptor drones.

According to the expert, a broader change in defense architecture is needed: distributed interception, active and passive radar coverage, a dense network of sensors and electronic warfare, all integrated with fire assets. He also noted that mobile fire teams were never limited to pickup trucks with machine guns and, depending on the task, could use portable missile systems, anti-aircraft guns or interceptor drones.

How to read the reports

According to a Forsal.pl note, Khrapchynskyi is development director at Fly Group Ukraine, a Ukrainian defense company that develops electronic warfare and electronic reconnaissance systems. That is worth keeping in mind when reading his assessments. No technical details of the turrets themselves were given.

For Polish readers, this is another example of AI entering air defense: not as a standalone system, but as an aiming module in machine-gun turrets, meant to replace slow human reaction. Whether it works at larger scale will only be shown by future attacks and data, which are so far missing.
