Indian police have arrested a man accused of murder who tried to avoid trial by faking his own death. He submitted photos of an alleged funeral to the court, but it was an animal, not him, that burned on the pyre.

What happened

According to NDTV, as relayed by PAP, the accused wanted the murder trial to be dropped. He covered a dead goat with a shroud and burned the animal on a funeral pyre so that it would look like the cremation of a human being.

He then used artificial intelligence tools to place his own face in an image of the burning pyre. The sources do not say which programs he used.

Documents filed in court

The man reportedly managed to obtain a death certificate. Before his arrest, he filed materials with the court meant to confirm his death, including photos of a funeral procession.

Police arrested him on Sunday. Forgery proceedings have been opened against the accused, and the murder trial has been resumed.

Debt and the stock market

Besides escaping a verdict, the aim was also to evade creditors. The man traded on the stock market, including with money raised from other people, although he had no specialist training.

What this means

The case shows that AI-altered images can end up in materials submitted to a court. Here the hoax was exposed and the man was arrested, but the reports do not describe how exactly it was detected.

It should be noted that the account rests on NDTV's reporting as relayed by PAP. The Polish reports do not name the accused or the town, and some details, such as how the hoax was uncovered, have not been made public.
